Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow

This is a poster depicted what good school attendance means.

School attendance is essential to every student’s success, and absences can easily lead to academic trouble and create gaps in relationships with friends. LLESD encourages all families to minimize absences unless a child is ill. Families should get their children to school as often as possible, on time, and align vacations and appointments with the school calendar to avoid unnecessary absences. Each day missed at school is a missed day of instruction, a day of classroom interaction with students and teachers that cannot be recovered.

What’s the difference between truancy and absenteeism truancy?
Truancy is in relation to unexcused absences, and it is important to note that family vacations are not excused absences. For a list of excused reasons, please visit the CDE website on attendance. Absenteeism is in relation to any absence, excused or unexcused.

We urge you to prioritize your child's attendance. Please avoid discretionary travel during school and plan vacations and trips during calendar breaks. There is no substitute for in-person instruction.

For your planning purposes, here is a list of upcoming breaks and important dates for the remainder of the 2023-2024 school year and the 2024-2025 school year:

2023-2024:
February Break: February 19-23, 2024
Spring Break: April 8-12, 2024
Last Day of School: June 6, 2024

2024-2025:
First day of School: August 14, 2024
Thanksgiving Break: November 25-29, 2024
Winter Break: December 23, 2024-January 3, 2025
February Break: February 17-21, 2025
Spring Break: April 7-11, 2025
Last Day of School: June 5, 2025

If trips are unavoidable, you may enter into a Short-Term Independent Study (SIS) for a minimum of three days and up to 14 days in a given school year.

  • Independent study takes a great deal of extra time for staff.
  • Independent study is not intended to replicate the rigor of classroom instruction or the social interactions between peers and teachers. There is no substitute for in-person instruction.
  • You must request Independent study at least two weeks in advance.
  • The student must complete the independent study work and turn it in to their teacher for the absence to be excused.

How does school attendance affect you and the community?
Since attendance is tracked on the Statewide Dashboard and impacts the rating of our school, a low attendance score due to chronic absenteeism will impact our overall score, which could affect property values. We mention this so that the community knows the impact of not sending students to school and the importance of planning your vacation during scheduled school breaks. It also affects our ability to qualify as a distinguished school.
