What is the Diagnostic Center-North?
California Department of Education, State Special Schools and Services Division
Employs professionals who specialize in serving students with special needs.
Services are provided at no cost to schools and families.

Who are students with social-cognitive deficits? Youngsters who:
May have difficulty fitting into the “norm” in their approach to learning and social interactions.
May be impulsive, easily frustrated and have difficulty controlling their emotions.
May appear noncompliant and can be difficult to manage in the general education classroom.
May have an inability to understand social information and to modify their inappropriate social behavior leading to isolation and problems in school.
May struggle with flexibility, problem-solving, strategizing and organization.
Are typically bright students who want to “fit in”, but, struggle with learning the steps of social-cognitive processing.
May have a special education diagnosis or may not.
What are the goals of the training: Enhancing Classroom Success for Students with Social-Cognitive Differences: Strategies that Work! on October 6, 2006 ?
§ Clarify the characteristics of students with social-cognitive differences
§ Recognize the implications of these differences to student success in the classroom
§ Develop a common framework to interpret and understand student behavior
§ Discuss strategies to cope with issues of:
o Poor social relationships
o Inappropriate student behavior
o Task completion
o Disorganization
o Emotional and sensory dysregulation
§ Provide skill practice for educators utilizing “prototypical” case studies of students with social-cognitive differences
