As Educators at LLESD we...

  • At the beginning of each school year, all K-8 students attend a class-based PowerPoint presentation by the librarian, lab paraeducator, or computer teacher covering the Acceptable Use Agreement, cyber etiquette and cyber safety.
  • All students and parents sign an Acceptable Use Agreement (BP6163.4) for grade level technology use in k-3s and 4th-8th grades which details the parameters of the technology use within the district
  • Grades 4-5 have computer lab times with active hands-on lessons using the website options shown below in "Resources". Although we have not yet officially adopted a program, the NetSmartz framework is extremely comprehensive and appealing to the students.
  • La Entrada's weekly KPAW broadcast will occasionally run NetSmartz's 90 second videos.
  • Annually, La Entrada hosts Officer Steve DeWarns who meets with 6, 7, & 8th graders regarding cybersafety and the internet. He also presents a Parent Ed evening.
  • All La Entrada classrooms and labs have CTAP's CyberSafety poster. The topics are infused as appropriate throughout the curriculum.
  • The La Entrada handbook addresses the issues of cyberbullying on pages 16 & 17.
  • The 2007-2008 La Entrada technology committee is focused on the evaluation of the Cyber Safety and Cyber etiquette needs, seeking effective methods to strengthen the awareness to all grade levels.

 As a parent, you can...

We highly recommend you exploring the sites below. Personally "play in" the NetSmartz, iKEEPSafe and iSafe programs as if you are your child and find what you are comfortable sharing with your child. These particular programs are designed and/or approved by our leading Government agencies. We encourage you to address any questions or concerns to our Director of Technology.

Resources

The following resources are core to understanding CyberSafety and valuable tools for educating our children.

CTAP4

CTAP4 has created an INCREDIBLE resource for students, parents, and educators on the important topic of the awareness of CyberSafety (http://www.ctap4.org/cybersafety/). We highly recommend reviewing this website. In addition, CTAP4 has created a downloadable PowerPoint presentation which links to what is perceived as the best cyber safety resources and contains video clips that support and teach the issues. Each classroom in grades 4-8 have CTAP's downloadable "Are You Cyber Safe" poster above their computers and in the computer labs and libraries.

The California Technology Assistance Project (CTAP) is a statewide educational technology leadership initiative designed to provide assistance to schools and districts in integrating technology into teaching and learning. Each of eleven regional CTAP offices provides technology support services in the areas of staff development, technical assistance, information and learning resources, telecommunications infrastructure, and coordination and funding. CTAP Region IV is one of the eleven regional centers in California working to provide assistance to schools and districts in collaboration with county offices of education, other regional programs, colleges and universities. Region IV is comprised of the seven counties surrounding the north San Francisco Bay area: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Solano. -CTAP4

NetSmartz

NetSmartz® is an interactive, educational safety resource from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children® and Boys & Girls Clubs of America for children (ages 5-17), parents, guardians, educators, and law enforcement that uses age-appropriate, 3-D activities to teach children how to stay safer on the Internet. The NetSmartz Workshop can be accessed at www.NetSmartz.org and www.NetSmartzKids.org. We HIGHLY encourage parents to view this site for your own education but also tour the student sections to see information we are reviewing as potential cyber-curriculum to be presented to the children during computer labtime. All access is free with sites that are relatable to all students of all ages in a fun, entertaining, and highly enriching/educational format.

The NetSmartz Workshop was made possible via a public-private partnership with the United States Congress, United States Department of Justice's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, and Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Sponsorship from private corporations enables the NetSmartz Workshop and its innovative content to be shared with children, parents, guardians, educators, and law enforcement globally via the Internet at www.NetSmartz.org.

iKeepSafe

The Internet Keep Safe Coalition group teaches basic rules of Internet safety to children and parents, reaching them online and in school. Governors and/or first spouses formed this coalition in partnership with a growing list of crime prevention organizations, law enforcement agencies, foundations and corporate sponsors.

The iKeepSafe.org website teaches children to safely navigate the Internet through a virtual playground, Faux Paw's adventures in storybooks, an animated video download, and educational games. Educational materials, including worksheets and tests, are also available for parents and educators.

i-SAFE

i-SAFE is another recommended site for parents, students, and educators and receives funding from the government. There are real life videos, training materials and items for purchase.

i-SAFE Inc. is the worldwide leader in Internet safety education. Founded in 1998 and endorsed by the U.S. Congress, i-SAFE is a non-profit foundation dedicated to protecting the online experiences of youth everywhere. i-SAFE incorporates classroom curriculum with dynamic community outreach to empower students, teachers, parents, law enforcement, and concerned adults to make the Internet a safer place.

Kids.gov Kids.gov is part of the official portal from the US government which has important sections on cybersafety. The information and activities/games for the grade 6-8 students is very well done and an excellant tool for teaching online safety.
